Mark loads up a new addition to the Captain's fleet, #37 a custom Kruger Cruiser. I am extremely excited with the maiden voyage being Boo and Hannah's fundraiser for breast cancer awareness.

Mark is leaving today and making his way west. We'll all link up on Friday in Peoria for a shake out of the gear and the Kick off party for Boo and Hannah. - Then the shuttle and dropping of vehicles. Lets light this candle!!

The promotion wheel has been turning non-stop this past week with more interviews and more articles going to print. The Milwaukee Journal / Sentinal will have a Feature Article coming out this Sunday.

After a morning of pressing the flesh with the press, (giving interviews on their up-coming paddle on the Missouri); Marissa and Hannah put in a four hour training sesh on an undisclosed lake in Illinois. (Super-double top secret location, don't need any boys creeping into the picture and screwing up the Dad's plans for trouble free teen years).

Gear is being sorted, transportation being arranged and the fun meter has been set for high. Mark is putting on the finishing touches to Big Medicine ll ( Kruger Cruiser Canoe) for the girls. We're almost good to go!

Tomorrow a TV news crew is putting together a segment for the local news. We're keeping our fingers crossed that CNN will pick-up on it so their quest to raise awareness around breast cancer will go national.

Hey Prof.

"Professor Ron"

I may be the Capt'n but Ron is the "Prof". At 72 years young, a retired professor from the University of Wisconsin - I listened intently to his on water lecture. - I even raised my hand to talk... :-)

Ron paddles most days with his dog GALA and I with KOA. It was canine heaven as both pups love to go for boat rides, content to be with their masters. Another random on water encounter.

Like most of us, Ron has a large sampling of canoes kayaks and sailboats, all the necessities for a man with a passion of being on the water. Today he was paddling a home built stripper of his own design.

Drats... Monday, back to the grind! I was just getting into it...

As we close in on the MR340, it is beginning to get real busy. Jenny Grow has stepped up and taken on other huge tasks. Not only running bank support during the event for our team, but has been coordinating news releases, working with our sponsors and has set up a blog specific to the MR340 for up to date coverage of Hannah and Marissa.

Kayaking Accomplishments – First and Fastest

Last week was a record-breaking week for kayakers – and paddlers in general – on the Trail. Not only did Mainer Gil Whitney become the first person ever to kayak through paddle the trail, but Mike Stavola, also in a kayak, became the fastest through paddler of our trail, completing the route in a blazing 32 days. We applaud both of these men (with a combined age exceeding 120, they have forever removed the “I’m too old for that” excuse from popular use) for their tenacity and good spirit, and we wish them rest, relaxation, and sun for the remainder of the summer.

Dispatches

Got out for a couple hours yesterday with the girls. Boo paddled bow, Emily duff and I was in the stern. We hooked up with friends and paddled Fowler Lake and the Oconomowoc River, stopped for lunch socialized and just enjoyed the last day of the weekend.

I had my list of needs for the MR340 with me, so after paddling we stopped by the local outdoor store and picked up new hoses and bite valves for our hydration systems and a 20 pack of tube socks for cooling ourselves on the river. (you stuff the socks with ice, zip tie the opened end and drape around your neck for a cooling effect) I suffered on the Missouri last year, not again. We'll have a support crew this year, so all the comforts of home.

Not sure where the weekend went, but its back to the grindstone - The Capt'n

Headline News:

• The weather has cooled off dramatically over the past week, from the high 90's to the low 70's, so much for extreme temperature training for the MR340. Starting to gather gear and supplies and checking things off. Super Boo is nervous as the clock ticks down.

• Work is completely out of control. Jefferson County has taken a hit with lay-offs, closures and a governor's budget that does not adequately meet the needs of our communities. Long days as we salvage what we can, make the difficult decisions on what we can afford, help those with the greatest need.

• Saw a legend, Bob Dylan at Summerfest, along with Willie Nelson; times are a changing. Hard to put into words, but being there made me feel really good. The concert itself was OK, the experience over the top. It was like getting a cool drink of water on a hot summer's day, after a long long long drive in a hot car, refreshing.

Time to wake the cherubs and push from the shore, the lure of frozen custard may get Emily in a canoe - paddle paddle.... - The Capt'n
