Mixed bag of...

Played around with a bunch of different sails for the Sea Wind today. Beat raking leaves....again. I have a rule, I only rake once a weekend, but the yard could use another once over.

Bottom line with the 3 different sail systems I have, none would be as good or better then a Balogh. So I have scraped the "ideas" I had for a unique sail rig(s) for the Sea Wind. The plan was to make a loose luff balanced lug sail, so I could reef it down.

I might have to take up sail-boarding... again. Now that I have a couple of sails and a board sitting in the garage. Either that or a huge garage sale... I can't even get the lawn mower in the garage anymore.

Been having some very cold mornings. Low 20's, cloudy and rainy. This is the first of the sun we have seen this weekend. It was snowing yesterday, though nothing was sticking on the ground.

With the cool rainy/snowy weather, Laura and I went up to the Wollersheim Winery for their fall harvest on Saturday. Then cruised by the paddling shop to try on dry suits, bug John and plan for next years 2nd annual paddle / sailing rendezvous on Lake Mendota.

What a concept, a kayak sail that you can reef. Sounds complicated. You would, at the least, need grommets. There being no boom, how would you secure the reef?

Not complicated at all rather simple actually. the foot of the sail would roll up on the full length battens, as the head of sail was lowered on a halyard. yes gromet points would be aded to secure the reef(s)

I may still do it, but i have my eye on a used Balogh that is coming up for sail... If I get the Balogh, i am golden...

I hope you get the balogh but if you don't I would try to make a rig that looked like one with that windsurfer sail. recut the leech (and shorten the battens),remove the luff sleeve. add grommets along the luff between every batten pocket and at each batten end location for plastic sunfish clip thingys. Add a thwart with a hole to the top of the sea wind and a block on the bottom for a mast base. Use another windsurfer mast or aluminum tube (sunfish spars are cheap and work great, we use them for spinnaker poles on the I-20 especially as spares in remote locations). Build you some foam outriggers (thats what I would do) and a leeboard (thats easy enough). Add a halyard, downhaul and stick for a boom and your done! BAM! go sail it and worry about reefing later. lol

I would need to be homeless building it in a donated storage shed, with a large dumpster near by to get supplies!! I'm e-mailing you...LOL
